The Three R's

In an effort to be more environmentally friendly we are continually encouraged to
reduce, re-use and recycle.

St. Brendan's National School has been involved in this for many years and we have been making an enormous effort.

We collect used postage stamps and give them to charity.

We have been working very hard at reducing the amount of paper refuse going out in our recycling bin.

In recent times we have reduced our paper refuse by half, which is great. We hope to improve on this in the future.

We have been doing this by re-using paper, then shredding all paper, surplus circulars, envelopes etc. Some of this is put into the compost bin but the majority of it is used by a farmer as cattle bedding, mixed with straw.

We have been making eco briquettes using some of our shredded paper. We mix it with lots of shredded newspaper, soak it for a few days, and then make the briquettes.

It is fun filling the paper into the briquette maker but squeezing out the water is a hard job! Teacher has to do that. It takes the briquettes a long time to dry out.
