The Board of Management recognizes the important connection between a healthy diet and a student’s ability to learn effectively and achieve high standards in school. The Board also recognizes the school’s role, as part of the larger community, to promote children’s health and environmental restoration.

The educational mission is to improve the health of our school community by teaching students ways to establish and maintain life-long healthy eating habits. The mission shall be accomplished through nutrition and healthy eating education, environmental awareness, and core academic content in the classroom.

The school will:-

1) Encourage lunch boxes to be filled in accordance with the guide lines recommended in the Food Pyramid ie at least one food from each of the lower four sections.

The School will:-
2) Encourage whole foods as opposed to processed foods which contain an abundance of ‘E’ additives.

3) Fresh fruit and vegetables are encouraged as part of the food eaten at school.

4) Pupils will be permitted to drink water only during class times and unsweetened juices/milk at lunch/break.

5) No sweets, biscuits, fizzy drinks, puddings (except rice pudding), chewing gum or crisps will be allowed.

6) Children should wash their hands before eating!

7) The school will continue to compost fruit/vegetable waste. This is in an endeavour to “green” our school.

This policy was formulated and ratified by the Board of Management.
